What Should I Do if I Have the Flu?

Even if you take all of the proper precautions like getting your flu shot and eating well, you can still come down with the flu. While flu symptoms in individuals who have gotten their shot tend to be less severe, it can still make you feel ill for a few days.

If you suspect you have the flu or are feeling sick, we can help with a diagnosis at AFC Urgent Care Fountain City! In the meantime, check out our latest blog all about influenza below.

How Is the Flu Different From Other Illnesses?

The flu, like any viral illness, can start out with some typical symptoms of sickness like a runny nose, sneezing or a sore throat. While it may start out with some mild symptoms, it may not stay that way.

Once the infection sets in, flu symptoms tend to appear quickly and suddenly, making you feel really sick in an instant. Because of this, when you start to feel ill, it’s time to head for home! Rest and recovery should be your main priority and you can avoid spreading it to another person if you stay home.

Classic Flu Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches

Can I Treat Flu Symptoms?

If your infection is making you feel really ill, you can certainly treat your symptoms for some relief. Any OTC medication that targets your specific symptoms can help you feel better while your body works to overcome the illness.

Since the flu is a virus, there is unfortunately no quick fix or immediate treatment. The best way to combat it is to just rest as much as possible, drink plenty of water, and get lots of sleep. Most people fully recover within a week or so and can get back to their normal lives.

4 Things to Skip When You Are Sick

  • Alcohol and caffeine
  • Hard-to-digest foods like heavy grains or greasy foods
  • Sugary foods or drinks
  • Outings in public, like to work or to school
