How Often Are STD Tests Necessary?- AFC Urgent Care

It may not cross your mind to get frequently tested for STDs, but it’s more important than you might think. Right now, one in five Americans have an STD, according to the CDC, which is currently an all-time high. Plus, the rates could even be higher than what is being reported due to the fact that many STDs don’t show symptoms.

If you are sexually active, it’s extremely important to be regularly tested for STDs, and our AFC Urgent Care Fountain City team highlights why below.

Why Is STD Testing Necessary?

Did you know? Getting STD tested is actually one of the most important things you can do for your health. Why, you ask?

Well, many STDs don’t usually show symptoms right away, but if an infection is left untreated or undetected, they can lead to serious health conditions, such as other lifelong STDs and an increased risk of cervical cancer and infertility. As long as you’re sexually active, you should be tested for STDs at least once a year. We’ve listed some additional reasons why you should get STD tested below.

Other Reasons STD Testing Is Important

  • Getting tested is quick and easy. Most STD tests are quickly performed and show results in just a few minutes. No needles are necessary as tests are performed by a swab in the mouth or urinating in a cup.
  • Most STDs are treatable. The sooner you know your status, the sooner you can get treated.
  • Many people are unaware that they have an STD. Many STD have symptoms that aren’t visible or noticeable, or don’t develop symptoms for months or years. The only way to know your status is to get tested.

How Can I Prevent STDs?

Frankly, the best and most effective way to avoid getting an STD is by practicing abstinence. You can’t get an STD if you aren’t having sex.

We’ve listed some additional ways to lower your risk of developing an STD below.

Ways to Prevent STDs

  • Reduce your number of sex partners. This can decrease your risk for STDs. It is still important that you and your partner get tested, and that you share your test results with one another.
  • Practice mutual monogamy. Mutual monogamy means that you agree to be sexually active with only one person, who has agreed to be sexually active only with you. Being in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner is one of the most reliable ways to avoid STDs.
  • Use condoms. Correct and consistent use of the male latex condom is highly effective in reducing STD transmission. If you have latex allergies, synthetic non-latex condoms can be used; however, these condoms have higher breakage rates than latex condoms.

If you need to be tested for STDs or have questions, don’t hesitate to stop by. Our AFC Urgent Care Fountain City team is here for you now and always.
